News channel booked by Chennai police for spreading ‘false’ news over death of migrant labourer

“The aforesaid news is utterly false, malicious and slanderous. No such incident has happened in GCP limits,” the police said.

The police also added that inquiry into the issue unfolded that it was a completely different incident. They said that a case of accidental fire was filed at the Villupuram Government Railway police station on February 6 after one Mohan Mahto of Bihar’s East Champaran district got electrocuted when he climbed on top of a train to Tambaram. The Villupuram district police had further issued an NOC to dispatch his mortal remains from the Kilpauk hospital to Patna.

Quoting a recent order issued by the Supreme Court which noted that hate speeches must be immediately acted upon by registering First Information Reports (FIR) and taking further proceedings against the offender, the Chennai police said a “legal action” has been initiated by the GCP and the cyber-wing of the Chennai Police (CCB) against the false news telecast under various sections including, 153 (provocation for rioting), 153 A(1) (a) (promoting enmity between different groups), 505 (1) (b) (circulating statement which may cause mutiny) and 505 (2) (intent to create enmity) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

“All are requested to desist from indulging in such type of malicious and slanderous information for which stringent legal action would be taken against them,” the police said.
