Fake videos case: Madurai court sends Youtuber Manish Kashyap to 3-day police custody

Kashyap, who was arrested by Bihar Police’s economic offences unit (EOU) after he surrendered at Jagdishpur police station on March 18 in relation to the case, was brought from Bihar to Tamil Nadu on transit remand by a special team of the TN police.

Based on a complaint filed against him in Madurai for spreading fake videos, a case was registered under various provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the IT Act and he was produced before judicial magistrate-I on Thursday.

Recently, videos of migrant workers allegedly being attacked in Tamil Nadu were shared widely on social media. The videos were debunked as fake by fact checkers and the police department. Soon after, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin issued statements and visited a couple of factories asking migrant workers not to believe such rumours and assured them that the state will provide all required support.

The state police registered cases and arrested those found circulating the fake videos on social media. Awareness sessions were held in several districts by the state police where the workers were briefed about the fake videos and provided helpline numbers to address grievances if any.
