Former Chief Election Commissioner Thirunellai Narayanaiyer Seshan passed away at his home in Chennai’s Alwarpet locality on Sunday.

The 86-year-old, who had not been keeping well for several years had passed away at 09:30 pm.

Following the announcement of his demise, condolences began pouring in from every corner of the country, as politicians and celebrities remembered the Ramon Magsaysay Awardee for his role in cleaning up the electoral process in the country.

Yediyurappa extends condolences

He invoked fear in recalcitrant politicians’ hearts, respect in every Indian: S Y Quraishi

Dr. S Y Quraishi, former Chief Election Commissioner of India who had worked under T N Seshan as an observer recalled the personality of the man who had worked against electoral malpractices in India. In an opinion piece, Quraishi said, "I recall the Bihar election in 1996, when I was posted as an observer. Mr Seshan concluded his briefing with these reassuring words: “Don’t worry. Nothing will happen — except a bomb on your face and a bullet through your stomach!” Sure enough, I saw two bomb explosions a few yards away. Fortunately I returned with my stomach unpunctured!"

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy condoled the death of TN Seshan. In a statement, the CM said "Thiru Seshan played a key role as an Indian administrative officer. In an opinion piece, Quraishi said, "The passing on of Mr T N Seshan marks the end of a glorious era of resurgence of democracy about three decades ago. The very mention of his name was enough to put the fear of God in the hearts of recalcitrant politicians in the first half of the nineties, and respect in the heart of every Indian ever since. I have no hesitation in saying that all of his successor CECs basked in his glory, though we always carried the burden of being compared with him all the time."

Tamil Nadu Minister for Municipal Administration, Rural Development and Implementation of Special Programmes, S P Velumani tweeted his condolences once news of T N Seshan's death broke out. "I am deeply shocked and saddened to hear that former Chief Election Commissioner T N Seshan is no more. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family", he tweeted.

Former Chief Election Commissioner T N Seshan died on Sunday at his residence at St Mary’s Road in Alwarpet, Chennai. He was 86.

The 1955-batch IAS officer was CEC from 1990 to 1996 and was known for his fight against electoral malpractices such as bogus voting and booth capturing.

Till T N Seshan took charge as the Chief Election Commissioner of India, the common man had little idea about the Election Commission.

He put the EC on the map. More importantly, he put the fear of the EC into erring political parties, candidates and the government. So much so, that the government clamped his powers by appointing two more commissioners to the EC.
