Chennai, Tamil Nadu News Live Updates: Chennai received its first rainfall of the year on Thursday, bringing an end to 195 days of zero rainfall and giving some relief to the city that has been ravaged by a heatwave for the past ten days. Areas in the city such as Tambaram, Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), East Coast Road (ECR), Padur, Kelambakkam, Siruseri, Navalur, Avadi, Adambakkam, Madhuravoyal and Ekkaduthangal experienced light showers On Thursday afternoon.

The Indian Meteorological Department announced that Chennai and the northern districts will continue to have light showers until Saturday, due to the formation of a new low depression in the Bay of Bengal.

Meanwhile, S P Velumani, the Minister for Municipal and Rural Administration announced on Thursday evening that the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Edappadi K Palaniswami will take a decision today on the offer by the Kerala government to supply water to Chennai from Thiruvananthapuram via train to tackle the drought in the city. The statement was made by Velumani after the Office of the Kerala Chief Minister took to Facebook on Thursday and announced that the Tamil Nadu government had declined their offer to supply 20 lakh litres of water using the railways.

DMK should appreciate TN government's efforts - Minister D Jayakumar


Tamil Nadu Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar has said DMK should not criticize the ruling AIADMK government just because they are an opposition party. "Tamil Nadu government is taking various steps to overcome the water scarcity crisis. DMK is criticizing us without looking at our efforts. Their protest will do no good for the state, " he said.

Temples in Tamil Nadu to perform special prayers tomorrow to appease rain gods

In order to appease the rain gods, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy has ordered AIADMK secretaries to conduct special prayers at all the temples across the state. Edappadi has added that all the Tamil Nadu ministers including himself and Deputy Chief Minister O.Pannerselvam will participate in the pooja.

Chennai Event: Music festival at Alliance Française of Madras

Alliance Française of Madras will be hosting Fete de la Musique (Music festival) at their centre on College Road from June 21 to June 23 in Chennai. Fete de la Musique is celebrated in 460 countries on the same day to celebrate World Music Day. This year's festival will feature professional bands from Chennai as the Institute celebrates its eighth year of the three-day festival.

Day 1 of Fete de la Musique will begin at 4 pm today at the Edouard Michelin Auditorium, Alliance Française of Madras.

Change in timings of MGR Chennai Central-Thiruvananthapuram Central Bi-weekly Express

The Thiruvananthapuram division of the Southern Railway announced on June 14 that the timimgs of the AC Biweekly Express from Thiruvananthapuram Central to Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M G Ramachandran Chennai Central Station have been permanently changed, with effect from July 1, 2019 due to operational reasons.

The timings will be put into place from July 1.

IOB to auction actor and DMDK leader Vijayakanth's properties, wife Premalatha confident of repaying bank

The Indian Overseas Bank announced today that they would be auctioning two properties belonging to Vijayakanth and his wife, Premalatha on July 26 this year to recover over Rs. 5.5 crore in debt that the duo owe the bank.

Addressing the media after the announcement, Premalatha said that she was confident about repaying the debt before the stipulated date and said that she would take legal recourse for the same. "This happens to every college. I will repay the money by July 26 since admissions will begin in the college by then", she said.

Additional funds allocated towards tackling Chennai water crisis

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, while addressing the water crisis in Chennai at a press conference today said that an additional Rs. 200 crore had been allocated towards tackling the crisis, bringing the total amount of funds to Rs. 358.42 crore. Further, he announced that Rs. 65 crore had been allocated for bringing in 10 million litres of water a day from Jolarpettai via railways. 

Madurai bench of Madras HC refuses to extend order against Pa Ranjith's arrest

The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court refused to extend the order preventing the arrest of director Pa Ranjith today. On Wednesday, the HC had directed the police to not arrest the director until his hearing which was held today. 

Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami holds press conference to address Chennai water crisis

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami held a press conference in Chennai today to address the city-wide water crisis, following the meeting at the Secretariat which was held earlier today. 

          • The CM announced that Rs. 158. 42 crore has been allocated to tackle the drinking water crisis in Chennai. 
          • Currently, drinking water is being supplied to Chennai through water drawn from the desalination plants, groundwater and water from the quarries in the city.
          • Further, plans are being put into place to bring in 10 million litres of water a day from Jolarpettai through the rail network.
          • The Chief Minister thanked the Kerala government for offering their assistance in tackling the drinking water crisis. However, since the amount of water is insufficient, the CM said that he is planning to write to the Chief Minister of Kerala to provide 20 lakh litres of water every day to Chennai from Thiruvananthapuram via trains.

Vijila Sathyanath proposes that the Centre take control of the management of Cauvery water

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) Rajya Sabha MP, Vijila Sathyanath spoke up about the ongoing water crisis in Tamil Nadu at the Rajya Sabha today and said that Tamil Nadu is a water deficit state with the Cauvery river being its only major river system.She compounded that the only solution left was for the Centre to take over the management of Cauvery water. "The release of water should be immediate", she said.

Meanwhile, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) cadres and residents held protests at Arumbakkam in Chennai today to protest against the water scarcity in their area.

TN CM holds a high-level meeting on water crisis

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palanisamy is chairing a high-level meeting at the secretariat today with state ministers and officials. The meeting is aimed to mitigate the ongoing water crisis in the city. Yesterday, the Tamil Nadu government said that it has not turned down neighboring Kerala’s offer of supplying 20 lakh litres of drinking water as the state is reeling under a severe water crisis. Saying that there was “no need for the help at present”, the Tamil Nadu government said Chief Minister K Palaniswami will announce “an appropriate decision”.

Queensland Amusement Park to be shutdown

Queensland Amusement Park, situated in Poonamalle near Chennai has been shut down temporarily from today. Following an accident on June 18th, where several people got injured during a joy ride; the police intervened and demanded the amusement park management to produce stability certificates for such rides. Since the management hasn't submitted the necessary certificates until now, they have suspended their operations temporarily.

Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin today said Chennai rains and actor Vijay's birthday are directly proportional to each other. "Listening to morning Radio and discovered that #ThalapathyBirthday and Chennai rains are directly proportional to each other. Keerappakkam, Moovarasanpet quarries identified as water sources for city

Metrowater officials identified two quarries - Keerappakkam near Vandalur and Moovarasanpet near Madipakkam as potential sources of water for Chennai in a bid to tackle the city-wide drought on Thursday. Officials at Metrowater had conducted a preliminary survey of the two quarries earlier and will be meeting with district officials soon to begin work at the quarries. 

Currently, water is being drawn from the Sikkarayapuram quarry and is expected to last for another ten days. 

Porur lake to be desilted after two-year gap

The Water Resources Department (WRD) announced on Thursday that they would begin desilting the Porur lake today, after the work had been discontinued two years ago. The announcement was made after Metrowater had written to the WRD to seek permission to desilt lakes in the city for improving storage and using them for sourcing drinking water in Chennai. 

Over 1.93 lakh cubic metre of silt is yet to be cleared from the lake, according to the WRD. The current capacity of the lake will be enough to supply water to the city for another two months. 

Chennai suburban trains to skip stopping at Senji Panambakkam station till June 25

The Southern Railway announced on June 18 that there would be a change in the pattern of suburban train services due to track maintenance work being carried along the Chennai - Arakonam section at Kadambattur Yard on the Up and Down lines from June 18 to June 25. As per the revised schedule, trains plying along the Down fast line between Tiruvallur to Thiruvalangadu will skip stopping at the Senji Panambakkam station until the maintenance work is over.

Madras HC to hear plea filed by Nadigar Sangam today

After the Registrar of Societies deferred the Nadigar Sangam elections on Wednesday, the South Indian Artistes' Association (SIAA) filed a writ petition at the Madras High Court on Thursday to challenge the Registrar's order suspending the polls indefinitely, after several members of the association alleged that their names had been removed from the list of eligible voters. 

Represented by actor Vishal, the petition was filed by counsel Krishna Ravindran on Thursday and is expected to be heard by the Madras HC today.

S P Velumani tweets that CM Edappadi will decide on Kerala's offer today

Minister for Municipal and Rural Administration, S P Velumani took to Twitter on Thursday night to announce that the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Edappadi K Palaniswami will be taking a call today on Kerala's offer to supply 20 lakh litres of water to water-starved Chennai through the rail network.

Velumani's response came after the Kerala Chief Minister's Office had posted on Facebook on Thursday that Tamil Nadu had rejected their offer to supply water from Thiruvananthapuram to Chennai.

Power cut in Egmore and Irulipattu today

Tandgedco announced on Wednesday that power supply to neighbourhoods in Egmore and Irulipattu will be cut today from 9 am to 5 pm to carry out maintenance work. The company said that power would be restored before 5 pm if the work is completed by then.

Chennai Weather for the day

After light showers graced various parts of Chennai on Thursday, weather forecasters have predicted minimum and maximum temperatures today to be 30C and 35C respectively. The sky will be cloudy and moderate rainfall can be expected in parts of the city.

It is a well known fact that the admiration of the fans of Kollywood actor Vijay knows no bounds. Last year, fans had pasted the actor’s posters alongside Periyar and former chief minister Anna Durai in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu. The poster conveyed that if Vijay comes to politics he will be the Chief Minister and if doesn’t he will be the ‘King Maker’ like Periyar.

The posters had then earned the wrath of common viewers. Now, it has started doing the rounds again on Whatsapp.

Despite various establishments struggling to make ends meet in light of the city-wide drought, swimming pools in Chennai continue to function with the help of water tankers. The pools, which are owned by public and private parties assert that there is no crisis, despite the fact that their borewells have gone dry and the authorities are having to rely on private tankers for replenishment.

Read - However, most citizens want the government to shut down all private pools until the crisis tides over.

It is left to be seen whether the government will initiate some action against swimming pools in Chennai.
