Parts of Chennai received light showers in the early hours of Wednesday morning, and the weather forecast predicts light to moderate showers in the evening as well.
The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has also predicted light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms in parts of coastal Tamil Nadu and neighbouring Puducherry today, with heavy rainfall predicted in the districts of Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Pudukottai, Kancheepuram, Villupuram and Ramanathapuram.
Private weather channel Skymet Weather announced on Tuesday that rainfall in the State is expected to increase from Wednesday evening due to the activation of easterlies and northeast monsoon in Tamil Nadu.
The #NortheastMonsoon and easterly winds will become active due to which we expect the #rainfall activities to increase over #TamilNadu and #Chennai from evening of November 27. #weather #weatherforecast #weatherupdate #rains #weatheralert https://t.co/pfRAp506Kb

The RMC also forecast a wet weekend for the city, with light to moderate showers expected on Saturday and Sunday. With a good spell predicted for the first week of December, the groundwater tables and water bodies across Chennai are set to receive a boost.
Despite the Northeast monsoon having commenced in the State in October, Chennai received deficient rainfall even as neighbouring districts received heavy spells for close to two months. The city had received on-and-off rainfall following the advent of the monsoon season in the State on October 17.
