Chennai News Highlights: After HC order, youth who performed bike stunts distributes road safety awareness pamphlets

Chennai Tamil Nadu News Highlights: Nearly two weeks after he was granted anticipatory bail by the Madras High Court, Kotla Alex Binoy, a 22-year-old social media influencer apprehended for performing bike stunts in Chennai’s Anna Salai road, distributed pamphlets on road safety awareness at Teynampet Mount Road Junction signal on Monday. This was among the several conditions imposed by the Madras High Court while granting bail to Binoy on September 21.

Nitin Gadkari, Union minister for road transport and highways, said on Monday that the Chennai port-Maduravoyal corridor in Tamil Nadu would be completed by December 2024. According to the minister, the Rs 5,800-crore elevated stretch of 20.5 km would be developed in four sections and start inside the Chennai port and end at the Maduravoyal interchange.

With the monsoon season fast approaching in Tamil Nadu and the threat of diseases like malaria and dengue looming, the Greater Chennai Corporation has begun taking measures to control the spread of vector-borne diseases. According to data issued by the civic body, 3,271 corporation workers, including 2,317 contract workers and 954 full-time employees, have been deployed to carry out a drive against mosquitoes. “A total of 224 larvicide sprayers, 120 power-sprayers, 300 battery-operated sprayers and 229 hand-operated fumigators have been set up by the corporation,” a release noted.

Covid-19 tally crosses 35.85 lakh in Tamil Nadu

amil Nadu has reported 443 new COVID-19 infections, including a returnee from the United Arab Emirates, and pushed the overall caseload to 35,85,006, said the Health Department on Tuesday. There were no fresh fatalities and the death toll remained unchanged at 38,047, said a bulletin.

Recoveries grew to 35,41,703 with 526 people recuperating from the virus in the last 24 hours, leaving 5,256 active infections.

Chennai and Chengalpattu accounted for most of the new cases with 95 and 38 respectively, while the rest were spread across districts. (PTI)

BJP demands stern action on those behind teacher's woes, neglecting govt school

The Tamil Nadu BJP demanded stern action on those who humiliated a government teacher for taking on the officials for their callousness towards the well-being of children of a local school in Krishnagiri district.

Expressing concern over the plight of the teacher, who broke down at a Gram Sabha meeting at Salamarathupatti village in Krishnagiri district, BJP's Tamil Nadu unit vice president T Narayanan said the teacher of a local school broke down while speaking about its pathetic condition.

"This incident throws light on the plight of the Tamil Nadu School Education department and the State government, as well. The teacher's grief and her ordeal at the hands of the government officials; and her statement that working in a government school is a 'curse' is tantamount to a slap on the cheek of the Tamil Nadu government," Narayanan claimed. Flooding unlikely; work on SWDs will be completed on time: TN Minister

With the stormwater drain (SWD) works at various stages of completion, Chennai is unlikely to witness inundation during this monsoon, Tamil Nadu Public Works Minister E V Velu said. Allaying apprehension of the December 2015 deluge-like situation, he said the stormwater drainage works were progressing and only about 10 per cent of the work remains to be completed, he said.

"The balance work will be completed on time and it will be ensured that there's no inundation in the city. Hopefully, Chennai will not witness flooding during this South-West monsoon," the Minister told reporters after inspecting the works, along with Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Minister P K Sekar Babu.

Velu said officials have been told to expedite the works. The progress of work is being monitored by the government, which is keen on ensuring the safety of the people, he said. (PTI)

Six pilgrims drown in Tamil Nadu’s Kollidam river

Six people got washed away after they stepped into the Kollidam river for a bath near Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur district Monday morning, the police said.

The deceased were identified as D Charles, 38, D Prithiviraj, 35, D David, 30, Anthony Essac, Praveen Raj and Hermes. Their bodies were sent to a government hospital for autopsy. Know more...

PSEB engineers protest bid to privatise Puducherry electricity department

Govt using IT tools to make TN hub of innovation: Minister Mano Thangara

The Tamil Nadu government was employing IT tools to make the state a hub of innovation, Mano Thangaraj, Minister for Information Technology & Digital services, said on Monday.

IT would be flexed to foster growth, generate employment and to provide citizen-centric services besides take the DMK government's social welfare schemes to people's doorsteps, he said.

"I spoke about the digital initiatives of Tamil Nadu government, especially skill development, providing high-speed internet access in village panchayats, initiatives in urban and rural areas, data-centric governance to identify genuine beneficiaries and other works at the Digital India's Conference of State IT Ministers," he said. Former judge's relative convicted in cheque bounce case

A Fast Track Court here has convicted a relative of a retired Supreme Court judge in a cheque bounce case and he was sentenced to undergo six months simple imprisonment.

Following a request from the counsel for the accused, the court kept in abeyance the operation of the order to enable him to prefer an appeal.(PTI)

Chennai port-Maduravoyal corridor to be ready by 2024, says Gadkari

Coimbatore | Man stabs ex-wife to death at hospital

A nurse was stabbed to death at a hospital here on Monday by her former husband reportedly over a personal dispute, police said.

The nurse and her husband got separated two years ago and the man was looking after their daughter, the police said. He went to the hospital today and picked up a quarrel with her over her alleged relationship with another man. Following this, the man took out a knife and stabbed her in the neck in full public view. She died on the spot, the police said.

The security guards at the hospital overpowered the man and the police, who arrived at the scene, arrested him. (PTI)

Tamil Nadu: DRI official accused of graft by CBI acquitted after a decade

A well-regarded Customs and DRI official who was arrested by the CBI in 2012 for allegedly receiving a bribe of Rs 2 lakh and an iPad, has been acquitted of all charges by a special CBI court in Chennai. The court noted that the prosecution “miserably failed” in proving the charges against Rajan, who was then serving as the additional director general of DRI.

Co-accused Murugesan, who used to be Rajan’s driver, was also found not guilty.

The acquittal order issued by CBI court judge AK Mehbub Alikhan on Friday was about a case in which Rajan allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 10 lakh and an iPad. It was the driver Murugesan who was accused of receiving the advance of bribe — Rs 2 lakh and the iPad — on March 6, 2012 from one Ubaidullah. Read More

Provide answer sheet to NEET candidate, HC tells NTA

The Madras High Court has directed the New Delhi based National Testing Agency (NTA) to provide the original answer sheet to a candidate who was unsuccessful in the recently held National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test.

Justice R Suresh Kumar gave the direction recently, disposing a writ petition from Nilgiris district based Chrisma Victoria. The petitioner prayed for a direction to the NTA to consider her minor daughter's representation made to authorities last month, seeking to show her the original Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) answer sheet. (PTI)

Sudden cardiac death prevention unit launched at city hospital

MGM Healthcare here has announced the launch of 24X7 heart electric unit and a Sudden Cardiac Death (SCD) prevention programme, on Monday.

Dr A B Gopalamurugan, senior consultant, Interventional Cardiology and Director Electrophysiology and Device Therapies, claimed very few centres in India have a dedicated programme for SCD prevention.

"Sudden cardiac condition is not the same as a heart attack. It occurs most often due to a heart electrical problem...There are other causes also for SCD. In fact, the commonest mode of death due to any heart condition is ultimately due to a heart electrical problem," he claimed. (PTI)

Tamil Nadu: Minor girl attempts self-immolation after being blackmailed, 4 held

The Tiruvallur police in Tamil Nadu arrested four persons Wednesday for seeking sexual favours and blackmailing a 17-year-old girl whom they had videographed while she was talking to a male friend near a field last week. The police said the girl had later on attempted self-immolation.

The minor girl is currently undergoing treatment at a government hospital in Chennai after suffering 50 per cent burns. According to her statement to a magistrate Wednesday, a case was registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

The girl reportedly told the magistrate that last week she was talking to a male friend near a field when the four accused, who are in their mid-twenties, videographed the duo and blackmailed the girl. The accused allegedly sought sexual favours and threatened the girl that they would send the video to her parents if she doesn’t comply.
