The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has introduced ‘Pink Squad’, a team of women security personnel trained in martial arts, to its security setup as an additional measure to provide a safe and secure experience to its women commuters.

“Apart from being well trained in martial arts and self-defence techniques, the Pink squad members are also trained in customer service and communication skills,” the CMRL noted.

The induction of Pink Squad members into the security team of the CMRL’s security service provider, M/s CISB Services Pvt Ltd was done in the presence of CMRL director M.A. Siddique and other senior officials at Nandanam.

The initial strength of the squad in the pilot stage is set to be 23. The officials informed that the squad will be deployed at crowded metro stations like Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central Metro, Arignar Anna Alandur Metro and Airport Metro.

The Metro Rail Department on Thursday issued a statement that due to increased ridership and crowd in the metro trains, it has become necessary to keep greater watch and vigil to prevent incidents of eve-teasing and other offences against women. This, the statement mentioned, is being done in addition to providing other safety measures like complete CCTV coverage of trains as well as stations.
