Tamil Nadu BJP on Monday announced it will fight urban local body polls alone and without its ally in the state, AIADMK, after the two parties could not reach a consensus in multiple rounds of talks. State BJP president K Annamalai said the call to break away from AIADMK was difficult but also an informed decision. Top AIADMK leaders O Panneerselvam and Edappadi K Palaniswami back the decision, he said. Annamalai said the BJP will put up candidates in all seats for the February 19 polls. He added the alliance with the AIADMK remains intact nationally.

“BJP cadres were particular they occupy seats in maximum local positions. That makes a lot of sense for a fast growing party like the BJP in Tamil Nadu. At the same time, we had to consider the issues within AIADMK too, their difficulties to meet our demands and share as many seats that we demanded. So after these detailed talks, we decided to contest alone…,” he said.

According to a senior BJP leader aware of the talks between the allies, the main difference was over the Mayor posts in Nagercoil and Coimbatore – which the AIADMK was unwilling to give up – and the 30-70 per cent breakup (70 to AIADMK) of seats sought by the BJP.
