The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Wednesday said it has completed 35 per cent of the road relaying works ahead of the northeast monsoon, which usually hits the city in November.
According to a statement, the GCC has taken up pending road relaying works that were supposed to be completed in 2022-23 along with the additional works chalked out for 2023-24.
The corporation has started road relaying works on 11,248 stretches (1,806 km) at Rs 1,030 crore. The GCC claimed that work is complete on 3,877 road stretches.
The statement added, “In the past six months, in 2,955 streets in the extended areas of the corporation, the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) and the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board were given permission for road cutting. The departments have handed over 1,967 and 505 roads, respectively, to the GCC for complete and temporary restoration works.”
“Among the 1,967 roads, restoration works in 1,582 streets are complete,” the GCC added.
The officials of the civic body said in the extended areas of the GCC, the drinking water supply and underground drainage works have been carried out seamlessly.
“But in certain areas, the sewage from the houses in the apartments has been let into nearby vacant lands and Storm Water Drains (SWD), causing inconvenience to the public and with the northeast monsoon in mind, the corporation is taking measures to provide a solution,” the officials added.
