All India Congress Committee (AICC) national spokesperson and Kollywood actress Khushbu Sundar quit Twitter on Tuesday citing negativity, leaving her fans surprised by her sudden decision.
The actress has been quite active on Twitter for years and has even been lauded by the Greater Chennai Traffic Police (GCTP) for using the social media platform to report about an illegally parked truck in her locality in June this year.
Speaking to Indianexpress.com, Khushbu said, “The reason I quit is that I definitely need my sanity intact. It is a very crazy world on Twitter. Twitter has become full of negativity. People are going on with their lives but there is so much negativity on Twitter where it shows that the world is coming to an end!”
The actress-turned-spokesperson said about 10 years ago, she and her daughters had decided to go off Facebook. “I realised that being on the platform with my kids was not the right thing since it can influence in a completely different manner. I quit Facebook along with my children and have not been back on the platform since then,” she said.
On her recent decision to quit Twitter, Khushbu said she did not want to cater to the “run-of-the-mill” and become somebody who she is not. “The negativity on Twitter was consuming me and turning me into someone that I am not,” she said.
Refuting claims that she had quit the social media platform because of trolls, the AICC spokesperson said, “I did not quit because of the trolls. I am not somebody who is going to react to trolls. I just wanted to be very normal and rather than spending time on Twitter, I thought of spending time with my girls and doing something very useful.”
This is not the first time that Khushbu has quit Twitter. In 2017, Khushbu had said she was quitting Twitter and had urged Twitterati to “use the platform to build the nation and not to divide” and had asked users to “keep hate and vengeance out”.
The actress further said she was not sure whether she was going to be back on the platform anytime soon. “For now, I am doing what I want to do,” Khushbu said.
When asked whether Twitter should frame laws restricting users from posting negative comments and views, Khushbu said one cannot control people from relaying their opinion since it is their birthright to express their views.
Having acted in over 200 films in the south, primarily opposite actors such as Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, Prabhu, Chiranjeevi, Sarath Kumar and Vishnuvardhan, the actress is currently playing the protagonist of the Tamil daily soap ‘Lakshmi Stores’. Prior to joining the Congress as a spokesperson in 2014, Khushbu was with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam from 2010 to 2014.
