Writer condemns present political scenario in nation

She also spoke about the Dadri lynching incident and added that the incident had raised questions over the very meaning of India and on the rights guaranteed to the citizens of India by the Constitution.

Delivering a lecture at the alumni meet of the department of English and cultural studies of Panjab University on Thursday, writer Nayantara Sehgal condemned the political atmosphere prevailing in the country.

“Today’s political atmosphere has launched an attack on literature. Since I am in Chandigarh today, let me take this opportunity to appreciate all the writers from Punjab and Haryana who have returned their Sahitya Akademi awards to protest against the Akademi’s silence over Kalburgi and murders of other rational writers,” she said.

She also spoke about the Dadri lynching incident and added that the incident had raised questions over the very meaning of India and on the rights guaranteed to the citizens of India by the Constitution.

“Indian citizenship means a celebration of our diversity and our differences. It’s very meaning was undone by the hideous lynching of a poor man in Dadri.”

Speaking on the controversial debate on the freedom of expression in light of the JNU incident, she said education in the country is also under assault.
