Workshop for history teachers begins at PU

The Department of History at Panjab University is organising a two-day workshop for college and university teachers on ‘Problems and perspectives of history teaching’ that commenced on Friday.

While addressing the workshop,Vice-Chancellor Professor R C Sobti said history as a subject is important for all disciplines,because every subject is learnt from its past. “History is the backbone of our education system,” he said. Professor S Bhattacharya,Chairman of the Indian Council of Historical Research,New Delhi,spoke about the various problems faced by research scholars including the lack of good libraries and appreciation.

Professor J S Grewal,an eminent historian and former vice-chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University,spoke about Punjab as a rich source of history. “It was the cradle of the Vedic civilisation and Mahayan Buddhism,” he said. He also identified the major issues in Sikh history,explaining how Guru Nanak was the founder of the distinct religion and how his work was carried forward by the successor Gurus.
