A WOMAN was killed while another was seriously injured when a speeding truck hit a scooter from the rear at the Housing Board light point at Manimajra on Thursday morning.
The deceased was identified as Shashi, 27, a resident of Dhanas. She was returning to Chandigarh after paying obeisance at Gurdwara Nada Sahib along with her paternal aunt Shubh Lata, 60, on an Activa scooter. Shubh Lata was riding the scooter while Shashi was on the pillion. When they were crossing the Hosing Board light point, a speeding truck hit the scooter from the rear, leaving Shashi dead on the spot and Shubh Lata seriously injured. Shashi was crushed under front tyres of the truck.
Both the victims were taken to PGIMER by the police where doctors declared Shashi brought dead while Shubh Lata was admitted to the intensive care unit in a critical condition. She suffered injuries on her head and also had multiple fractures in her legs and arms. She was said to be out of danger. She is the wife of Tehal Singh, the owner of a chicken corner in Sector 22.
Shashi had studied up to matric and worked as a beautician. She lived with her grandparents in Sector 45. The family members of Shashi said that they were preparing for her marriage.
The truck driver, identified as 27-year-old Vishal Thakur of Daria village, was arrested by the police and booked for negligent driving. He reportedly lost control of the truck when he was crossing the light point.
