Woman burnt for resisting rape bid dies

The police booked Sandeep Singh,a resident of Peron village in Mansa district,for murder of a 30-year-old woman.

The police today booked Sandeep Singh,a resident of Peron village in Mansa district,for murder of a 30-year-old woman,who succumbed to burn injuries in Baba Farid Medical College and Hospital,Faridkot.

“The woman was allegedly set ablaze after the accused poured kerosene on her on the evening of January 11,when she resisted his attempt to rape her,” said Jaurkian SHO Karamjit Singh.

The SHO said the neighbours arrived to douse the flames after hearing screams of the woman for help and Sandeep fled from the scene by scaling a wall. “The woman was taken to a hospital in Bathinda with 60 to 70 per cent burn injuries and from there was referred to the hospital in Faridkot. After recording the statement of the woman,a case of attempt to murder and rape,besides other sections (of Indian Penal Code) was registered against Sandeep on January 12. After the woman’s death today,we have added section 302 (murder) in the case,” the SHO said.
