The Congress will wait for the notification to be issued by the government for the holding of elections for the Mayors post,to finalise the name for the top post.
Congress MLA from Panchkula,D K Bansal, said that even as the party has started consultation among its elected members for deciding on the unanimous candidate for the post of Mayor, the party will only announce the name of the candidate once the government issues notification for the holding of polls for the top post.
Bansal said that the notification is likely to be issued shortly for the post of Mayor. According to government officials, they have written to the Urban and Local Bodies Department to issue a notification for elections to the post of Mayor. They add that the elections for the post of Mayor, senior Deputy Mayor and Deputy Mayor, will be held on the same day on which the successful candidates of the Corporation will take oath.
Meanwhile, both the BJP and INLD are trying to muster the strength to field a candidate for the post of Mayor. The INLD has left the option to join the BJP and is also trying to woo the Congress-supported independent candidates to join it to elect a Mayor. Sources said that the party has sent feelers to both the BJP and independent candidates on it.
However INLD district president,Manoj Agarwal, said that the party will be holding a meeting in the next few days to decide on whether it will contest on the top post. He however said that the majority view within the party is that it should give a contest to the Congress candidate in the elections. We dont want to fight the election for the post of Mayor for the sake of it. Once the numbers are on our side we will take a final call on the issue, he said. Sources also add that the BJP will also be convening the meeting of its elected members in next few days to decide on the name of the candidate for the post of Mayor.
