With just three days left for the elections, the SOPU,PUSU,ABVP and INSO presidential candidates were busy campaigning today. With their different agendas, all are distinct from each other. Parvesh Chandel of ABVP is the only party president who is a presidential candidate. A favourite of all the girls in his department (School of Communication Studies),Parvesh belongs to Himachal Pradesh and has been settled in Chandigarh for 20 years. He holds a BA,loves playing cricket and has played at the state level too. However, professionally he wants to become an IAS officer and is preparing for the UPSC exams. Friends say he is always hungry and forgets the world while eating.

But he does happen to be short-tempered.

“I believe that students should not vote for parties but for leaders based on how reliable he or she is. I don’t think that protest is a solution to any problem. There is always a practical way out and protests are just pressure tactics and a public show of blowing issues out of proportions”,he opined. If he wins,he wishes to press for more scholarship programmes for students and increase faculty in the departments to make the University an education hub.

Rita of INSO is the only female presidential candidate in the past two years. She is hardly audible while she shouts out INSO slogans but has been leading the campaigns throughout. Rita is a final year LL M student and belongs to Haryana. She is interested in reading newspapers and chatting with friends.

Rita says she wants to ensure a better position for girls in the University. “With over 70 per cent of the students being girls,PU needs to focus on hooliganism on campus, which is targeted against girls,” she pointed out. Besides this, she wishes to work for a change in the syllabus structure of the departments.

Satinder Singh Satti, the SOPU candidate for the post of president,is a final year student of the Geology department and belongs to Punjab. Senior leaders from the party say he has been chosen for his dedication and hard work over the past five years. They claim that he has been responsible for maintaining the stronghold of the party in the science departments through his goodwill and hard work.

Satti says that it is important for people to know you through the work you do for them. He said that he would work on building better infrastructure for the students at PU. “As president,I would like to take up the issues of hostel accommodation and quality of mess food offered here,” he added.

PUSU presidential candidate Abhinav Puri is a final year UIET student. A native of Amritsar,he is a national level table tennis player and was admitted to the University on sports quota.

Puri says he will focus on the ‘right to service’ for students and ensure that administration-related work of the students is done on time. “I will try to get the authorities to address students’ issues on time or be fined.” He added that hostel accommodation is also a major problem for PU freshers, which will be addressed by him at the earliest.

There is a fifth candidate,Kumar Vikramjit of UIET. He is not from any party.
