Former Minister Hira Singh Gabria’s son Rakhwinder Singh Gabria is the SAD candidate from ward number 61.

Vidhan Sabha Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal’s nephew Jaswinder Singh Bhola is SAD candidate from ward number 60.

SAD MLA Ranjit Singh Dhillon’s wife Narinder Kaur Dhillon is contesting from ward number 2.

Dolly Gosain, daughter in law of former cabinet minister Satpal Gosain,is contesting on a BJP ticket from ward number 41.

Mamta Ashu, wife of Congress MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu is contesting from ward number 49,Ashu’s cousin is contesting from ward number 54.

These are a few of the relatives of politicians who will contest the upcoming Ludhiana Municipal Corporation elections.

Take the case of Ranjit Singh Dhillon. Councillor in ward 2,Dhillon in the recent Assembly polls had won from Ludhiana East. Not ready to give up his ward 2 seat to any other candidate,he has chosen his wife Narinder as the candidate. His reasoning: He got his wife to contest from his ward only after he became an MLA.

Former minister Hira Singh Gabria has sought ticket for his son from ward 61. Earlier, the ticket was given to Harbhajan Singh Dang, leader of SAD councillors in the House. However,Dang wanted ticket for his wife from ward 45 and thus, left ward 61 for Gabria’s son. While seeking votes,Gabria’s son Rakhwinder is playing the card of development.

Former minister Satpal Gosain wanted a ticket for his daughter-in-law Dolly Gosain from ward 41,from where senior BJP worker Reeta Dhir was also seeking to contest. However, according to sources,Gosain threatened to resign if ticket was not given to someone in his family. BJP obliged.

When it comes to ward number 60,SAD workers are an unhappy lot. They allege that the ticket has been given to Jaswinder Singh Bhola to keep Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal’s happy despite him being an outsider.

Congress MLA Bharat Bhushan Ashu,is under scanner for getting a ticket for his cousin and wife Mamta . He,however, claimed,“My wife was already a sitting councillor and my cousin got a ticket from the ward from where I used to contest earlier. What is the harm in this?”

When contacted, irrigation minister and head of screening committee of MC elections,Janmeja Singh Sekhon, said: “We took proper care in allotment of tickets. The winnablity of candidates was an important factor.”

While 29 Congress rebels are contesting the civic polls as Independent candidates, over 20 from SAD and BJP are also following suit.

From Ward 21 papers of Congress candidate Anita Seth and her daughter Reena Wadhwa, who had filed nomination as covering candidate, were rejected by Returning Officer-cum-SDM 1 Iqbal Singh Sandhu on the ground that the proposers in both the cases were outsiders. “As per the Section 38 (1) of the Punjab State Election Commission Act-1994,an elector of the ward can only propose a candidate for his constituency.

Bhatia elected unopposed after Cong man joins SAD

JALANDHAR: Jalandhar Senior Deputy Mayor Kamaljit Bhatia was elected unopposed from ward 45 after Congress candidate Gulshan Kumar Sarangal withdrew his nomination and joined SAD on Wednesday evening. Sarangal joined SAD in the presence of District SAD President Gurcharan Singh Channi.
