Will be known as Department of English and Cultural Studies if Syndicate gives its approval

The almost 75-year-old English Department at Panjab University, set up when the university was in Lahore,is all set to undergo a change in nomenclature.

If the decision is implemented by the PU Syndicate in its meeting scheduled for Saturday, the Department of English would be renamed as Department of English and Cultural Studies.

The change in name has been suggested as the department has been offering different cultural studies courses as well. Now,it wants the same to be mentioned in the name.

Also,as PU plans to introduce the semester system, the syllabus for MA courses will be modified in such a way that cultural studies would emerge as the main area of teaching and research in the department.

Explaining the reason behind the change, chairperson of the department Professor Rana Nayar said,“We may launch Special Assistant Programmes (SAP) soon and such programmes are granted by UGC only to those departments which show a specialisation. Under this programme,we would be able to get grants and thus students will have access to better research facilities.”

Professor Nayar further said the change in nomenclature would in no way involve any additional financial burden for the university, nor would it involve any significant changes in the way admissions are conducted or the way degrees are awarded.

Though many people have memories attached to the department, they are happy with the change.

Talking to Newsline,Sumant,a students at the department, said: “The change in name will add to the prestige of the department and it is great that we will get more benefits”. Others too have welcomed the move stating that the decision is being taken keeping in view the growth and development of the department.

After PU gave its nod to a five-year integrated course in English Honours at the varsity from the coming session,it further plans to introduce a three-year integrated course in colleges as well. This would mean that a student studying for a BA (Honours) degree will have to clear all nine subjects as compared to the existing four from the first year itself.
