Mounting a stage production of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ is considered an amazing feat, and students of Class V from Yadavindra Public School (YPS) presented a beautiful adaptation of the novel at Tagore Theatre on Friday evening.

Based on the children’s novel by L Frank Baum, the story chronicles the adventures of a young girl Dorothy, along with her friends in the Land of Oz. The author explores the theme of self-contradiction through three characters in the novel – the brainless Scarecrow, the heartless Tin Woodman and the cowardly Lion. The three characters embody the classic human virtues of being intelligent, caring and courageous. However,it is their self doubt that keeps them from realising these qualities. The learning for the children here was to overcome these doubts and choose ‘right’ over ‘wrong’.

Vijay Kumar Machal, the production’s director,is a theatre teacher at YPS. The play was a labour of love of efforts from the staff and students that went into the long practice and training sessions, collection of props and building of a backdrop and procuring costumes, all of which was out there for everyone to see and appreciate.
