A summer camp is no longer about painting and drawing sessions or a space to while away the long, hot summer afternoons. From star gazing to cooking, expression art to theatre, vocabulary building to globe-trotting…facilitators are thinking out-of-the-box to create modules, which are absorbing, interactive, fun, simulating and add value to a child’s overall personality.

The idea is to go beyond the usual in act to connect with children at a personal level, helping them to learn virtues such as team-work,healthy competitive spirit,to think independently and be curious, nods Madhuri Anand, who has conceived ‘Without Walls’,a programme the educator describes as a learning odyssey where there is exploring and learning without boundaries,on topics that are not taught as a discipline, but learned over a lifetime of experiences.

“We at Without Walls intend to prepare children to be true-global citizens. During the two weeks of the workshop,we aim to hone a child’s general awareness,’’ said Anand, who uses visual slides and documentaries for the programme conducted in Sector 3 that is open to children in the age group of four to 12.

A journey that will take children across the globe, get them acquainted with several luminaries including presidents, prime ministers, sports personalities, musicians. Working on increasing word power, conducting science experiments, travelling across galaxies,Anand promises there are many uncharted territories still waiting to be discovered.

Anu Vala of The Go Bananas Kids has been experimenting with the format of summer workshops, striving to sizzle up the summer vacations with a lot of hungama. Over the three weeks,May 23 to June 16,in Chandigarh and Panchkula, children will be involved in theatre, dance and creative arts.

“Our stage performance at the end of the workshop, picnic, splash party and field visit are a big hit,as they give children confidence and help many to come out of their shells and interact with one another without apprehensions,’’ quips Vala.

At Coveda in Sector 18,summer workshops are about fresh perspectives, and activities that give children and adults an opportunity to explore their creative side. From May 28 to June 7,the workshops have been designed keeping varied interests in mind. Puja Aggarwal,a culinary expert, will experiment and innovate with children to come up with tongue-tickling titbits as part of her cooking workshop.

For those with a creative disposition,Satya Rana promises to help children explore their inner potentials for imaginative expression with hands-one art, craft, painting and creative workshops.

Expression Art,2D to 3D is a workshop that focuses on using everyday usable materials in ways to find expressive mediums to show installation.

Japneet Keith will encourage children to explore the materials available in the environment, especially objects that can be recycled and reused. Macrame, magic math, texture explorations with mixed media, playing with numbers, mental gym to sharpen brains,theatre,story-telling and mime, playing with clay…you will be spoilt for choice, with exclusive workshops lined up for adults,as well.

Putul Nacher Ashor,an NGO which has been working in the field of education since 2005,has tied up with Little Millennium School for their summer camp. The camp aims to provide opportunities to children for meaningful engagement through fun activities by using puppets and stories.
