On the first day of the ban on watering of lawns and washing cars on Friday, the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation penalised three persons and issued 56 notices for misuse of water.
A fine of Rs 2,000 each was imposed on the three persons for flouting the ban, while notices were issued where water was found overflowing from tanks.
For effective enforcement of the ban, 18 teams under a sub-divisional officer have been constituted. The ban will be effective till June 30.
Sources said maximum number of notices were issued in southern sectors. For the past few years, the enforcement wing of the municipal corporation has been facing criticism from the public for only penalising residents in southern sectors for wasting water, ignoring those residing in northern sectors.
Chandigarh receives 87 million gallons (mgd) of water daily against the peak-time requirement of 116 mgd. The residents complained about low water pressure, especially on upper floors.
