As a run-up to the World Theatre Day,many city-based theatre groups are all set to stage their latest productions. The Community Theatre Workshop will stage Mera Laung Gwacha,a Punjabi play which raises crucial issues like womens liberation in the thick of male dominance. Dowry, plight of girls married abroad, low women education ratio… Mera Laung Gwacha is the story of a Muslim woman who is first deserted by her fiancée for want of dowry and later deceived by her NRI Pakistani husband who abuses her and abandons her in an alien land. Ultimately, when she bears him a daughter, the husband threatens to disown both the mother and child. This is when the protagonist takes a stand to safeguard her dignity. The play is based on a Pakistani story by Lally Chodhury and was adapted by eminent playwright Gursharan Singh. The writer leaves the judgment to the viewers, says the director of the play Parveen Jaggi of SPKK Theatre Group.
Theatre Arts Chandigarh will stage Jab Jaago Tabhi Savera,a play written and directed by Rajiv Mehta,on March 27 at the Plaza in Sector 17 at 1 pm. The play, says Rajiv,is a comedy-satire on the so-called spiritual gurus and babas everywhere in the country, who are just hypocrites.
