The ward comprises two of the most popular shopping hubs in the city. Residents from the tricity are frequent visitors to Sectors 22 and 17,especially on weekends. While the ward has seen many development projects take off,a few got stuck due to procedural delays.
The ward has witnessed development of greenbelts, installation of multiplay equipment and development of community centres. The residents, however rue the lack of maintenance in the area.
Development in the Ward
A revamp of Sector 17 is currently in full-swing. Apart from the Plaza, the remaining part of the sector is being given a facelift. The area near the Bridge Market in the sector that was considered neglected is being refurbished. Apart from landscaping of the area, new flooring and lights are also being provided. A multilevel parking lot has been approved for the area and the designs are being made. Additional surface parking lots have also been made. An overbridge for the sector has been approved and construction will start in the coming months.
Meanwhile in Sector 22,the Nehru Park was revamped and inaugurated. The roads in the sector have been widened and re-carpeted. Paver blocks have been provided at most places. New multiplay equipment has also been installed. A community centre is also coming up in Sector 22. The same is the case with Sector 16 where the big gardens that have now come under the purview of the Municipal Corporation are being provided with play equipment
Problem Areas
With Sectors 17 and 22 being the hub of commercial activity, parking is a major concern that is yet to be addressed. The first multilevel parking proposed for Sector 17 was scrapped, almost four years after it was mooted. There is a need for increasing the provisions for parking.
Encroachments prevail in the markets in these sectors. While Sector 17 was declared a zero tolerance zone when it comes to encroachments, vendors thrive in the market. In fact in Sector 22 vendors have started selling goods from the cars in the parking lots. The encroachers might vanish as the teams from MC approach, but soon reappear.
The project for refurbishing started a few years back and is yet to be completed. The project hit various roadblocks including a cement scam.
Resident Speak
Varinder Guleria,Sector 17:
The work for upgradation of the area around Bridge Market is progressing at a slow pace. In the past three years it has hit several road blocks. It will take at least another year for the work to be completed. This keeps people away from the market.
Arvind Jain,Sector 22:
The areas that are close to the councillor’s house have seen better and faster development. The rest of the sector work is progressing at a slower pace. While the sector is better off compared to the others, there is scope for improvement.
Sunita,Sector 22:
Heaps of garbage have piled up in the backlanes and need to be cleaned up. Our complaints go unheard with no one taking responsibility. The parks in the sector have been developed very well with ample play equipment.
Councillor Speak
Area councillor Pardeep Chhabra said “All the promises I had made to the people before the elections have been fulfilled. The ward has seen much development. Roads have been widened and paver blocks provided. Parks have been developed in the ward. The long pending demand of a community centre in Sector 22 has been taken care of. Parking facilities have seen an improvement.”
