Sepoy Karnail Singh from Dholmajra village claims he served in the army as a Sepoy from 1959 to 1968 and actively fought in the Sino-India and Indo-Pak wars. “We served the nation when our services were wanted the most and fought three wars in 1962,1965 and 1971. Buxt when the army got surplus staff,we were thrown out without any pension benefits,” Singh said.
He is among the several soldiers who served the army during an emergency, but could not earn pension due to reasons beyond their control.
For 40 years,I struggled to get pension, which is my due right and what do I get in return? This draft has shaken me to the core,I have never felt so humiliated, he said.
Is this what the Prime Minister has to offer ? I will return the amount and also write a letter thanking the minister and PK Bali,Under Secretary of PMO, Singh said.
Singh rued,”We spent our youth serving the nation and at this age we are forced to live a sub-standard life. The action of the government has disturbed me mentally. I am feeling like a beggar.”
