A young Chandigarh brand takes the fashion world by storm

The venture kicked off in the initial days of November last year, marked by the usual struggles faced by any budding business.

For 35-year-old Anahat from Sector 18, Chandigarh, her journey has been all about nurturing her passion for diverse couture. Within just a year of launching her e-commerce platform showcasing unique designs, leading brands like VESTITO have approached her.

The venture kicked off in the initial days of November last year, marked by the usual struggles faced by any budding business. However, Anahat remained steadfast, and her persistence has borne fruit.

From starting in a room at home to now owning an office building, Anahat personally crafts every new design. Her repertoire spans from coordinating sets to exclusive mother-daughter twinning sets, redefining comfort wear.

How did the idea of VESTITO originate?

The idea to start VESTITO struck me after my marriage. I aimed to pursue something I truly loved—a dream of owning my own label. I initiated with the ‘aazif’ collection featuring coordinated sets, followed by the ‘enchantment’ collection, introducing customized mother-daughter twinning sets, women’s dresses, and shirts.

I observed a lack of quality in many products flooding the market today, especially concerning fabric purity. Fabric quality holds paramount importance in contemporary wear. Additionally, I aimed to offer more options in the comfort wear segment, facilitating effortless transitions from morning wear to evening style with the right accessories.

How did you translate this idea into VESTITO?

With initial financial and moral support from my husband, I ventured into e-commerce. I conducted designing and manufacturing from home, conducting thorough research, visiting export houses, and even exploring Jaipur for fabrics. While my initial collection was outsourced to an export house, subsequent collections, like ‘enchantment,’ were entirely self-crafted, receiving remarkable appreciation and paving the way for more collections.

“The early days were challenging, but my husband, involved in the construction business, constantly motivated me, emphasizing the inevitability of tough days in business. His advice to take breaks during rough patches and restart the next day kept me going. Today, with dedication and blessings, VESTITO has garnered unexpected love.

How far has your idea reached?

Most of my clientele hails from Gujarat and Mohali. Our summer 2023 collection witnessed substantial success, with our team delivering designs across various cities in the country.

While numerous multi-designer stores have approached us over the last year, our immediate focus remains on establishing a unique identity for VESTITO, given our relatively short journey. Presently, I’m negotiating bulk orders with a recognized brand.

Your thoughts on academic performance and its relevance?

I’ve always been an average student. High grades don’t determine life’s success, but knowledge is pivotal. It guides wise decision-making, aids in seizing opportunities, and helps shape one’s career path. I completed my Grade 11 and 12 from Vivek High School and pursued college at MCM DAV in Sector 36, Chandigarh.

How can Chandigarh retain its talent?

Leaving Chandigarh permanently isn’t feasible; it’s our city beautiful after all. Education and job opportunities often beckon us elsewhere, promising enhanced quality of life and increased prospects. However, patience, family support, and hard work can lead to discovering ample opportunities within the city.

Government support for start-ups?

The government could establish more exhibitions across major cities, similar to the ones held biannually at the India Expo Centre in Noida for the garment industry. Such forums save travel time and enable direct interaction between buyers and suppliers, immensely benefiting budding brands.

Your leisure activities and stress relief techniques?

Long walks are my go-to, especially when facing roadblocks in VESTITO. Yoga is a regular practice—five times a week. Physical exertion helps clear my mind and alleviates stress.

Message to aspiring entrepreneurs?

Believe in yourself, heed your instincts, and avoid rushing into decisions. Prepare for both good and bad days. As my husband advises, during tough times, take a breather and begin anew the next morning.

Your favorite aspect of Chandigarh and something you’d like to change?

I adore Chandigarh. Every corner, every market in our city holds cherished memories.
