Vendors protest paucity of space at new Sector-20 mandi

Hundreds of vendors of Apni Mandi protested at the Anaj Mandi in Sector 20 after the new venue for the mandi was found insufficient to accommodate all the vendors.

Hundreds of vendors of Apni Mandi protested at the Anaj Mandi in Sector 20 after the new venue for the mandi was found insufficient to accommodate all the vendors.

The vendors also claimed that the Haryana Mandi board officials manhandled them and threw their vegetable stalls away upon being informed of this anomaly.

“Till now,the venue for the Sector 20 mandi was near the sector market. Today it was shifted inside the Anaj Mandi. But the area that was allotted for the mandi could not accommodate all the vendors. When we reported the matter to the secretary of Haryana Mandi Board, who sits at the Anaj Mandi only,we were manhandled and our stalls were thrown away,” said Shravan Singh,a vendor.

Pretam Singh, another vendor, added: “This is not the first time that the district secretary for the Panchkula mandi has misbehaved with us. There have been several times when they have overcharged, giving assurances on providing us with better space for putting stalls in the mandi.”

The vendors later protested against the officials and shut down Apni Mandi. The intervention of the police brought the situation under control.

A number of residents, who had come to purchase vegetables, had to face problem due to the ongoing tussle between the vendors and the mandi board officials.

Suman Kumari, district secretary of Apni Mandis told Newsline: “It was following a demand from the residents of the area that Apni Mandi was shifted to the new venue. As it was the first day, there was some problem over the allotment of space. Besides it had rained too.”

She added that due to the paucity of space, the stalls of some of the vendors, who had put up more than one stall, had to be removed to accommodate all. The venue for the mandi at Sector 20 will remain the same and would not be shifted to the previous site.
