UT traffic cops moot licence suspension for driving drunk

So that drunken drivers are dealt with severely,the Chandigarh traffic police have decided to recommend suspension of driving licences of drunken drivers. This is for the first time that the Chandigarh Traffic Police have decided to recommend suspension of driving licences of even first time offenders (drunken drivers).

For this,the Traffic Police will be writing to Registration and Licensing Authority (RLA) recommending suspension of driving licences. As many as 4,650 drunken drivers were issued traffic violation slips this year.

Apart from this the police are also going to acquire 35 new alco-sensors to increase the police personnel who can be equipped with the device. The new sensors will be an addition to 30 which have extensively been used this year.

The year also saw the traffic police requesting the Court to convict the violators and over 195 persons were convicted ‘till the rising of the Court’ by apart from imposing monetary penalties on them.

Confirming the move,Deputy Superintendent of Police(DSP Traffic) Vijay Kumar told Newsline,“ We will be recommending the suspension of driving licenses of all the people who will be caught driving under the influence of liquor. The move will be taken as we want to sustain our campaign against drunken driving violation”.

He added the Traffic Police will focus on to create more awareness about traffic rules at the grassroots particularly at the schools in the coming year. Traffic Police will also be equipping itself with around 100 hand-held ‘challaning’ devices by next year.

These devices will be connected to a central server located at the Traffic Lines. It will enable cops to know the history of traffic violation of a person by just entering his name . The device will also facilitate the payment of compounding fee right at the spot through credit and debit cards. T he department will also get three additional cranes including a hydraulic crane very soon.
