Municipal Corporation is awaiting permission to convert parks in some sectors into playgrounds. A proposal was sent to the Architecture Department of the UT Administration to allow the parks to be converted into playgrounds in order to provide some space for children to play.
The proposal pertaining to the parks in Sectors 15,47 and 48 was sent for clearance nearly three months ago. A final decision is awaited. With the parks being developed in different sectors being out of bounds for children,as they are equipped with benches and huts, children have no place to play.
At places, the residents welfare associations have put restriction on playing games like cricket and football. There is a lack of alternatives and there have been tussles between elderly and children over the issue.
Following this, councillors in some sectors mooted a proposal to construct playgrounds instead of parks with facilities for games like basketball and volleyball. Councillor Davesh Moudgil said,A proposal was mooted for construction of playgrounds in my ward. The clearance is,however, awaited. There are no places where children can go out and play. We want that there should be facilities provided to them for outdoor activities.
Most of the parks that are proposed to be converted into playgrounds are those that are yet to be developed. Earlier a proposal had been mooted to allow children to play in schools in the neighbourhood. It was felt that schools could open doors to children and let them play in the evening when there were no classes. Schools were, however, reluctant to allow this stated that children would damage the infrastructure in the premises.
