The managing committee of the Special Fund for Reconstruction and Rehabilitation of Ex-Servicemen on Monday approved a significant enhancement in financial assistance and grants aimed at strengthening welfare measures for ex-servicemen and their families in Chandigarh.
The decisions were taken at the annual meeting of the committee, chaired by UT Chandigarh Chief Secretary H Rajesh Prasad, at the New Secretariat in Sector 9. Home Secretary Mandeep Singh Brar and Deputy Commissioner and president of the Zila Sainik Board Nishant Kumar Yadav were also present.
Nominees of the Ministry of Defence and the Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare, including retired Air Marshal Sukhchain Singh, retired Brigadier Gurgopat Singh and Lt Col T S Tomar, attended the meeting.
Zila Sainik Welfare Officer Col H S Ghuman briefed the committee on the progress achieved over the past year across various welfare initiatives for ex-servicemen in the city.
The committee approved an increase in financial assistance for junior commissioned officers and other ranks who retired or were released without pension, are above 65 years of age and living in penury, raising the amount from Rs 5,000 to Rs 8,000.

In addition, the annual grant provided by the Chandigarh Administration for augmentation of the special fund was enhanced from Rs 5.5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh.
