To bring an end to the increasing problem of parking in Sector 17,the Chandigarh Administration has decided to revive the underground parking areas in Sector 17 in a ‘time bound’ manner, preferably by end of June.

The administration took several decisions in a meeting held by officials of the Chandigarh Administration earlier this week. It has also been decided that LED display boards will be installed at the entry and exit points to manage parking lots efficiently.

One of the suggestions made by the officials was “introduction of intelligent parking monitoring system in the form of CCTV cameras, display panels enabling the public to know the status of the available parking slots in the parking area being visited and the parking areas where parking is available”.

Amicus curiae,Advocate A P S Shergill submitted that with the implementation of the token system for parking area in front of Sahib Singh block and Empire store building, chaos has subsided to a great extent.

He emphasised that parking is a commodity and cannot be treated as a matter of right.

A system of “exponential minute and hourly based tariff plan for the parking area in front of Sahib Singh block and Empire store building,” was proposed to deal with congestion.

The Administration has also taken assistance from UIET students who recommended “retrofitting of underground parking lots” in Sector 17. A presentation submitted by the students will be shown to A P S Shergill and Reeta Kohli whose suggestion to extend the existing two-wheeler underground parking till CMC was also taken into consideration.
