“Aren’t we all judged everyday, on our appearance, our clothes, our looks, the way we walk, talk, conduct ourselves. Irrespective of the field we are associated with, women, by and large, are under scanner. The beauty business is in the spotlight, hence the heat, but the judgment is relentless and constant,” Aparajita Sharma defends her stance pretty well when we introspect a little more about the beauty academy she has laid the foundation for in the city.

The ‘Be You Academy’, which is all set to open doors this September with a Miss Tricity pageant, is a school, says Aparajita, that goes beyond appearances. A grooming expert, pageant mentor and a model who made it to Miss India Top 10 in 2011, Aparajita stresses at the overall personality, communication skills, confidence levels, styling and other finer nuances as the winning combination for any job or contest.

“Pageants are often dismissed as platforms for female objectification, but so much more goes behind the scenes, in polishing the personality of the contestant who walks down that ramp. At our academy, the aim is to help people, from all age groups, gender, walks of life to develop and groom their personality, to sharpen their communication skills,” says Aparajita.

‘Glamour struck’ when she watched Aishwarya Rai Bachchan on the television, Aparajita, also a student of architecture like Aishwarya, decided to give Miss India a shot. The one month she stayed in Mumbai for the training was a gamechanger. “It was tough and an eyeopener and I wanted to do something like that for the people of my city for I feel there is a huge gap here. Whether it’s a job interview, or first meeting or a marriage proposal, first impressions are lasting, and I’d like to help people achieve their potential through my school,” says Aparajita who also went online during Covid and trained many boys and girls. She has been doing grooming boot camps and classes with luxury hotels too. Dedication, fitness, passion, consistency, discipline are the key to a well-rounded personality, she says. “Information too is important. There are many girls and boys who are not able to move forward in spite of being talented due to lack of proper information and guidance. We shall be focusing on soft skill development too and are tying up with agencies including those in LA for scouting and showcasing talent from here,” says Aparajita, who will open the academy along with former IAS motivational speaker Vivek Atray.
