Over 5.4 lakh unemployed youth across Haryana are currently registered with various employment exchanges across the 22 districts, revealed the state government while replying during the Question Hour on the concluding day of the Monsoon Session of the Vidhan Sabha Tuesday.
Replying to the question raised by Independent MLA from Meham Balraj Kundu, Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said that 13.98 lakh youths enrolled in district employment offices during the past eight years (2015-2022) in Haryana. He added that 4,595 jobs were provided through Haryana Public Service Commission (HPSC) (from April 1, 2015 till date). Similarly, from 2014-15 till March 9, 2023, 97,751 jobs were provided through Haryana Staff Selection Commission (HSSC).
Kundu had asked the state government to provide details pertaining to unemployed youth across the state on four points – (a) the total number of the youth who enrolled in district employment offices during the past eight years and the number of youth who were provided permanent employment; (b) the rate of unemployment in the state together with the total number of graduate, post-graduate and professional degree holders who are unemployed; (c) the district-wise number of youth who died by suicide due to unemployment from 2014 till date; and (d) the district-wise number of unemployed youth in the state together with the policy of the government to reduce the unemployment in the state.

Replying to Kundu’s question, the CM tabled the statistics on the floor of the House. “Based on the Quarterly Bulletin (January-March 2023) of Periodic Labour Force Survey conducted by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI), GoI, the unemployment rate of Haryana is 8.8 per cent. According to the report received from employment exchanges of the state, category-wise details of applicants registered with them as on July 31, 2023 is 1,03,265 graduates, 29,988 postgraduates and 21,569 professional degree holders,” the CM said.

Khattar added that in the past eight years, approximately 1.69 lakh youth on an average got themselves enrolled every year in various employment exchanges in the state. “The data regarding permanent employment provided in the private sector is not centrally maintained by the Directorate of Employment, rather the employment department plays a facilitative role between job seekers and their prospective employers. However, HPSC and HSSC are primary recruiting agencies that recommend candidates to the government to provide them permanent employment,” the CM said, adding that since 2015, 12 youths died by suicide allegedly due to unemployment.
