Unclaimed bodies at the mortuary of PGIMER,are not kept properly,if the claims of an NGO which cremates unclaimed bodies at the city government hospitals are anything to go by.

Members of the All India Seva Samiti,an NGO which has since 1989 cremated 1197 bodies so far, today alleged that the unclaimed bodies at the PGI mortuary are not kept properly, most of the times not out in the refrigerators due to which at the time of cremation, the bodies emanate foul smell and sometimes are infected with maggots.

Madan Lal Vashisht,a member of the NGO who is doing this social work from many years said,“It becomes extremely difficult for us to cremate the body due to foul smell and fluids coming out of the body owing to lack of proper refrigeration”.

When contacted,Manju Wadwalkar,PGI spokesperson said,“There is a huge rush even at the mortuary as many patients who die at the hospital are from other states. As a result, the police also have to wait for completing the formalities etc. As far as the faulty refrigeration is concerned,I will have to check it tomorrow”.

Sources say there are about a dozen refrigeration units in the PGI mortuary but even these are not enough owing to the huge rush at the hospital.
