The mercy petition filed by the 17 Punjabi men on death row in the UAE will now be heard on June 16. The appeal came up for its first hearing in a Shariat court in UAE on Wednesday. The 17 were awarded death sentence for the murder of a Pakistan national.
Lok Bhalai Party president Balwant Singh Ramoowalia, who has been pursuing this case, said: The lawyers appointed by the Indian embassy presented our case and the court set the next date. We will get a result in two to three dates.
The UAE court also directed the authorities to translate the FIR into Punjabi and give a copy each to all 17 accused. Many of the boys in this group do not even know the charges they are facing. The entire police and court process is in Arabic and these boys, many of them who cannot even understand or speak English, have no clue about the proceedings. The courts order for an FIR in Punjabi is a very kind gesture, added Ramoowalia.
He also thanked the Indian embassy authorities for personally calling up all 17 families and informing them about the latest development.
Arvidner Singh, whose brother Sukhjinder Singh faces the gallows, said: My brother called us up today and he sounded very happy. He told us that all of them were in high spirits for they now know that the entire nation is with them and that the Indian government is doing everything to bring them back safe.
