A UT constable and his alleged paramour, another constable, were acquitted of attempt to murder charges on Thursday after the victim – his wife – turned hostile in court; bringing an end to proceedings in a bizarre case that saw the victim, allegedly having mistaken for dead, return home.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Preeti Sahini acquitted constable Rajesh Kumar and constable Niharika, accused of attempting to murder Rajeshs wife,Santosh,by pushing her into the Ganges after Santosh retracted her statements and told the court that she was not pushed into the holy river but had slipped.
The case dates back to 2012 when,as per initial statements of the victim, the trio were on their way Haridwar. According to Santoshs complaint,Niharika had asked them to drop her off at Haridwar and had hence joined the couple. When they reached Haridwar,Rajesh allegedly pushed his wife into the river. The two constables then returned home and and told the rest of the family that Santosh had drowned.
There was high drama, however,at the police colony in Sector 26 when Santosh returned home and alleged that her husband had pushed her into the water. Based on this,a case of attempt to murder was registered against constable Rajesh Kumar and his paramour constable Niharika in October 2012. The duo, however, were acquitted on Thursday.
