The Chandigarh Police on Monday arrested two members of a gang,who allegedly committed two separate crimes – a robbery and then an attempt to murder – both in a span of two hours on Sunday night. The accused were identified as Dharampal and Sonu – both of whom are notorious criminals with many cases registered against them in the past. The other members of the gang are absconding.
According to the police,eight cases of similar offense have been registered against Dharampal and 15 cases against Sonu by the Chandigarh and Panchkula police. Sonu was released from Burail jail on November 4,and on the very same day he had attacked one Vijay Kumar at Bapu Dahm Colony,police said.
A total of nine persons were injured in both the incidents,including two women and a home guard volunteer.
On Sunday night,Sher Singh,a resident of Mauli Complex was celebrating his sons birthday party at his home. Singh had hired a DJ for the party. After dancing for a while,Singh and other family members decided to stop the music and have dinner. At 10.15 pm,around four-five unidentified youths entered the party and asked Singh to resume the music. On being denied,the miscreants,who were carrying sticks and knives,allegedly started beating up Singh. When his family members tried to save him,they attacked them too. A total of eight family members got injured including,two women. The injured were taken to PGI and GMSH- 16. The miscreants then fled from the spot.
Later at midnight,the miscreants reached Mari Wala town in Manimajra and stopped at an eating joint. Paramjit Singh,who runs the eating joint,was about to leave with his three friends – Saawan,Pankaj and Rajinder. They held Paramjit at knife-point and asked him to hand over his cash and other valuables. The robbed Paramjit of a silver bracelet and Rs 700-800 cash. Then they robbed his friends Saawan of Rs. 1,200 and Pankaj of Rs. 2,000 and and his gold ear rings. However,Rajinder,who is posted as a home guard volunteer at Operations Cell of the Chandigarh police,refused to hand over his mobile phone. Upon this,the miscreants stabbed Rajinder (who was off duty) in the stomach with a knife and fled away. Rajinder was taken to PGI.
The Chandigarh police arrested Dharampal from Indira Colony on Monday after receiving a tip-off. On interrogation,they found the location of one of his accomplices – Sonu – and arrested him from near the railway tracks in Manimajra. Both the accused will be produced in court on Tuesday.
