The identities of the victims, reportedly labourers, have not been confirmed, the police said. (Express Photo)Three people died after their pickup truck, heavily loaded with tiles and marble, overturned on the Jalandhar-Ludhiana highway near Phillaur in Punjab on Tuesday morning.
Four others who were also in the vehicle were seriously injured in the accident that occurred near the Shehnai Resort around 8.15 am, the Punjab Police said.
The identities of the victims, reportedly labourers, have not been confirmed, the police said.
They added that the victims sustained fatal injuries after heavy marble and tiles fell on them.
According to initial reports, the vehicle with construction materials lost balance and overturned after hitting a speed bump at high speed.
Some of the men were seated in the cabin and others on the roof and they were thrown onto the highway under the impact of the accident, the police said.
Two people died on the spot while a third succumbed to injuries during treatment at the hospital, said an officer.
The Punjab Police’s Road Safety Force (SSF) and police officers from the Phillaur station rushed to the spot.
SSF personnel rushed three injured individuals to the hospital in their vehicle, while a fourth was transported via the 108 ambulance service but he later died during treatment.
The truck driver who was among the injured later stated that the vehicle went out of control after hitting a bump near Phillaur.
He claimed that there were seven people in the truck at the time of the accident.
“We have identified the owner of the vehicle who belongs to Ludhiana and he is reaching soon as of now. Phillaur police have launched an investigation into the incident,” said Sub Inspector Bhushan Kumar, Station House Officer of Phillaur station.
Authorities have urged transporters to avoid overloading vehicles and to ensure that passengers are not seated in unsafe areas.
