As city colleges spring back in action with the new academic session,fashionistas stand up in attention. For now,there’s just no way they can identify or segregate students of different colleges based on there dress code. No longer can they assume that a funky fashionable girl is a GCGite (yes that’s what we address our lovely ladies from Government College for Girls) or a formally dressed student is from SD College or one in a subtle kurta teamed with jeans is the studious one from MCM College. There is a perfect mishmash and cross-pollination.
“All college girls look the same. Right from their head band to the nail of the toe,” observes Pratibha Sahi,a city-based designer,as she shuttles from Sri Guru Gobind Singh College to GCG on the same day and though happy on the change,mulls over the loss of identity. One that many feel have been triggered by the global fashion appeal and has been taken forward with the addition in add-on courses and central admissions.
“From a time when we could choose the college according to the outlook they portrayed,now we have to make do with where we get admission. Besides,now with add on courses each college gets a mixed crowd,” feels Divya Harnal,a final-year student of GCG,who like others in her batch agrees the transition in the fashion scene was slow and subtle and was not easy. “There was resistance,stares and at times seclusion – not by friends,but yes by other college-mates who often pinpointed,” says Shimoni Dutta,a 19-year-old,as she recalls the first time she wore hot pants to SD college. The comments,she tells were overbearing and these were more from girls than boys.
But that was her first year in college. Now,others have followed suit and live up to the global fashion statement — jumpsuits,halters,gladiator sandals and knee-length dresses. Walk into this college or any other college of the city,there’s a homogeneity that follows. “The girls now are trendy,chic and experimental,” chips in Mani Parthi,who having completed M.Com from SD College is now a faculty member here and has seen the grey line blur – from a time when GCG was considered “The Institute” for arts,SD College Mecca of Commerce and MCM College a disciplinarians’ hub.
“This change has set the standards for everything else. Right from their aura of intellect to their dressing style,” chirps Harneet Kaur,who started teaching in Guru Gobind Singh College,Sector 26,a few years back and has seen the students rise on the trend-o-meter. Right from oiled hair and ill-fitted kurtas to funky jumpsuits and fancy hair bands. Irrespective of the course or college they are studying in,they now all follow the hi-street fashion dictum.
Testifying the change is Era Gakhal,a final year student of MCM College,who has discarded her first years’ collection of ‘conservative’ style long ankle-length skirts and replaced them with hot pants and chic dresses. As 26-year-old Gunjan Nagpal,a city-based designed says,“Complete with poker starlight hair,hemlines flirting around the knees,gladiators and big bags,Chandigarh college girls are chic and fashionable. They are finally out of the unsaid dress code that once bound us. Its liberating yes,but a little boring to see everybody dressed in the same way. It however,does put us high on the fashion circuit,” she signs off.
