Six accused in a gang rape case were awarded rigorous imprisonment by the district court here today. Sukhbir Singh (20),Gaurav (21) and Sonu Singh (20) were awarded 10 years imprisonment for committing the actual act of rape and the three other accused Jasbir Singh (21) Avtar Singh (26) and Sukhbir Singh alias Shoki (25) were imprisoned for five years for facilitating the crime.
Additional Sessions Judge Preeti Sahni,after hearing both the counsel,opined that that the act committed by the accused was heinous. The judgement stated that the act ravished the victims body and soul,leaving a deep imprint on her mind. It was ruled that the accused Gaurav,who was known to the victim,had betrayed the trust that the victim reposed in him and,not only raped her but allowed others to rape her too.
The defense counsel argued that the accused are young in age and at the threshold of their career and a lenient view should be taken on them,while the judge ruled that the act is shameful and the offenders did not deserve leniency. Such kind of offence haunts the victim for whole of life and and the family also remains worried about her future,because our society is not sympathetic towards the victim, stated the court order.
It was argued by the defense counsel three of the six accused,Jasbir,Avtar and Shoki had not committed the actual act of rape and a that a lenient view be taken on them. After considering all aspects of the case,Sukhbir,Gaurav and Sonu were awarded rigorous imprisonment of 10 years and a fine of Rs 10,000 each. The others three,Jasbir,Avtar and Shoki were sentenced for five years and fined with Rs 10,000 each.

In January 2011,when the crime took place,the victim was a minor (16) and one of the accused,Gaurav,was known to her who was said to have allured her and raped her with the assistance of the other five accused.
All the accused are residents of village Dhanas where the crime was executed. The counsel for the victim have said that they will file for revision of the present order with the High Court to seek a greater punishment for the three accused that have been imprisoned for a term of five years.
