TWO BIKE-BORNE youths snatched gold chains of two women in different parts of the city on Sunday. The bikers could not be identified. Police registered two cases at Sector 26 police station and at Sector 36 police station against unidentified persons. The woman who was made target by the snatchers in Sector 37 did not lodge a police complaint.
The first case was reported from Sector 43 when two bikers made a 74-year-old woman, Kulwant Sharma, their target. Kulwant, a resident of Sector 43, was outside her residence when the bikers snatched her gold chain. She could not note down the number of the bike. A case against unidentified bikers was registered at the Sector 36 police station under sections 379 (theft ), 356 (assault or criminal force in attempt to commit theft ) of the Indian Penal Code.
The second incident was reported from Sector 27 when a woman identified as Sandhya Chawla was going to the market for some work. In her complaint to the police Sandhya said that she noticed a bike coming at a fast speed towards her. The bike halted suddenly, a man who was wearing helmet snatched her gold chain and fled away. She said that she could not respond to the situation as she was scared by the sudden action. A case against unidentified persons was registered at the Sector 26 police station.
The third incident was reported from Sector 37 when two youths made Preety Sharma their target and snatched her gold chain. However, Preety did not lodge any police complaint as she had to leave for Ahmedabad on Monday, said a police official of Sector 39 police station.
The city has witnessed a spurt in the number of snatching cases recently. This year in the last eight months as many as 131 cases have been registered in the city while the total number of cases last year was 146.
