As many as 10 temporary shopping outlets will come up for a period of three months at Chandigarh International Airport from mid-November, officials said. Chandigarh International Airport Limited (CHIAL) officials maintain that they have awarded a tender to a company, which will sell items like clothes and artificial jewellery.
“The firm will open shops inside the security hold area of the airport and the firm will be allowed to set up the outlets for a period of three months,” Chief Executive Officer of the airport Sunil Dutt told Chandigarh Newsline. He said that the CHIAL had already started a process under which 12 major retails outlets would be set up at the airport in the next few months.
Dutt said that a Chandigarh-based firm had been selected for setting up the market. He said that they were expecting the outlets to come up around November 15. “This will be a type of market. It is only for three months only. By then, we expect 12 retail outlets which will sell different kinds of items to come up at the airport,” he said.
Recently, CHAIL added additional snack bars and a restaurant at the Chandigarh airport. The fresh eating joints are part of the tender, which was awarded to a company to set up as many as 14 food and beverage (F&B) outlets at the airport. The passenger facilities continue to come up at the airport, two years after the new terminal of the airport was inaugurated in Mohali.
While the airport has continuously witnessed an increase in footfall, starting from October 3, many flights were curtailed after the watch hours at the airport was revised due to the runway upgradation. Currently, the runway, which is controlled by the Indian Air Force, is no longer available after 4 pm for the commercial airlines. At present, the first flight arrives at 7.10 am while the last flight takes off at 3.45 pm.
CHAIL would announce a new flight winter schedule for the airport in the coming days. The Air India has announced a new direct flight to Bangkok from Chandigarh Airport from December 11.
