A massive rally was organised in Sector 25 by teachers of universities and government and private colleges from across the state on Wednesday. After proceeding on mass casual leave, the teachers demanded implementation of the revised UGC pay scales as notified by the Ministry of Human Resources Development.
The call for mass casual leave and rally was given by Punjab Federation of University and College Teachers Organisation (PFUCTO); a federation representing five universities,54 government colleges and 170 private colleges of Punjab and Chandigarh.
Addressing the rally,Dr Jagwant Singh, general secretary of PFUCTO,said the pay scale which was supposed to be notified by the Central government in October 2008,was delayed by almost two months as the model code of conduct came into effect due to the announcement of the State Assembly elections.
PFUCTO vice-president and PUTA president,Dr Raunki Ram,said that since 80 per cent funds to meet the additional financial burden was to be borne by the Centre for the period of January 1,2006 to March 31,2010,the Punjab state government should implement the pay scales at the earliest.
PFUCTO Secretary Dr Mukesh Siag expressed surprise that the state government was unable to obtain a copy of the order from the Government of India through official channels of communication.
Meanwhile,it has been learnt that Education Minister Dr Upinderjit Kaur has sent the file to Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal for approval in principle. In view of this development,PFUCTO has decided to wait till February 10 for the government to notify the new pay scale, after which PFUCTO will intensify the agitation, the members said.
