In its Syndicate meeting scheduled for this Saturday,Panjab University will take a final decision on refunding the fee to students who vacate seats before the last date of admission. The decision will affect nearly 60 students.
Keeping in view the guidelines laid down by the University Grants Commission (UGC),a committee set up to look into the matter has recommended that the money deposited at the time of admission should be refunded if the student leaves the course before the admissions end. The UGC rules read: Should a student leave after joining the course and if the seat that is consequently falling vacant is filled by another candidate by the last date of admission, the institution must return the fee collected with proportionate deductions of monthly fee and proportionate hostel rent, where applicable.
A decision on this has been pending for a long time now.
The Syndicate will also decide on starting an M.Phil course in the Department of Police Administration. If approved by the Syndicate, the course will have 10 seats,of which four will be reserved for the in-service police personnel.

Another important issue to be discussed at the meeting is regarding the change in nomenclature for the English department.
The department may be named as the Department of English and Cultural Studies if the Syndicate gives its nod. A discussion on increasing the parking space outside Students Centre and University Institute of Law Studies will be held too.
