THE SUSPENSION of the Panj Pyaras by the Shiromani Gurudwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) is being seen as “unfortunate and disappointing” for the ‘Khalsa panth’ by Sikh devotees who are visiting Golden Temple in Amritsar.
The decision of the Panj Pyaras ordering the SGPC to remove the jathedars of Akal Takht is the actual decision of Panth itself, said Nirmaljit Singh, an NRI from UK who had come to pay obeisance at Golden temple Saturday. He lauded the courage shown by the Panj Pyaras at this critical time.
“For us, the action of Panj Pyaras is supreme as they are the beloved of Guru Sahib. They were right when they asked the jathedars how they had pardoned the Sirsa dera head who always goes against the Sikh Rehat maryada (Sikh religion code of conduct),” said Santokh Singh, a devotee from Tarn Taran.
“The Panj Pyaras must be consulted when the Panth is in crisis and they have the authority to challenge anyone who is guilty of damaging Sikh principles and honour of the community,” said another devotee.
“Takht jathedars have lost credibility as they made a mistake and only realised it after several weeks. They are SAD-controlled jathedars who had nothing to do with the Sikh panth,” said another devotee, Tarlochan Singh from Delhi.
“Punjab has been burning for over three weeks. Earlier, it was due to the farmers’ protest and now the Guru Granth Sahib sacrilege. These problems are all due to SAD’s policy that is controlling both politics and religion,” said Harshdeep Kaur, a woman devotee from Canada.
