Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal met a Congress MLA and supporters of Independent MLA Simarjit Singh Bains when he visited Ludhiana on Tuesday.

Surinder Dawar, the Congress MLA from the Ludhiana central constituency, startled all as he reached the city mayor’s residence to meet Sukhbir. He claimed that the meeting was just to submit a memorandum. “Development work in my constituency has been pending for years. Sukhbir Badal might be the president of Akali Dal but he is first the deputy chief minister and so I decided to meet him personally and submit the list of pending work in my constituency,” Dawar said.

In another surprising visit, Sukhbir went to the residences of councillors Kamaldeep Karwal, Satpal Singh Lohara and Jagbir Sokhi — who all used to be the staunch supporters of independent MLA Simarjit Singh Bains. The trio even organised rallies for him, in what is being viewed as a tactic to please the Deputy CM and pitch their names for Atam Nagar and Ludhiana South (constituencies of the Bains brothers) for the 2017 polls.

Karwal had recently had an ugly spat with Avtar Singh Makkar, the SGPC chief, when he allegedly abused and misbehaved with him, “He (Sukhbir) only talked about development in the meeting and there was no discussion on Makkar’s issue. It is so because we did nothing wrong he Makkar had nothing to prove. Deputy CM did not discuss that issue with me,” Karwal said.

Lohara formally joined Akali Dal on Tuesday during a rally.
