With the return of Deputy Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Sunday to the country, the issue of the appointment of the mayors of the four municipal corporations in the state is expected to be resolved soon.
The elections for the Amritsar,Jalandhar,Ludhiana and Patiala municipal corporations were held on June 10 this year, and since then, while Sukhbir remained abroad, the positions of the mayors have remained unoccupied for almost three weeks.
Sukhbir is expected to come to Chandigarh on Tuesday to make the decision.
Traditionally, the BJP and the Akali Dal share the four mayoral seats equally, with two seats from each party. The BJP usually appoints its mayors in Amritsar and Jalandhar, and the SAD in Ludhiana and Patiala.
Recently,Damdami Taksal chief Harnam Singh Dhumma and Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandak Committee president Avtar Singh Makkar stirred up controversy when they demanded that the city of Amritsar should have an Akali mayor as it houses the highest temporal seat of Sikhs, the Akal Takht.
The party president is back and the issue of the mayors will be resolved soon now, Akali Dal spokesman Daljeet Singh Cheema said.
