After at least 26 students from Sri Guru Hargobind Public School in Kaunke Kalan village of Jagraon, Ludhiana district, failed to appear for their class X boards allegedly due to negligence of the school management, the Ludhiana rural police Sunday booked school’s director and owner-cum-president for cheating.
On March 24, the day of the first class X exam of the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB), these students had reached their “exam centre” carrying handwritten slips given by the school claiming those to be “roll numbers.” However, the staff at the exam centre did not allow them to appear for the exam and it was found that the school never got students registered with the board.
The FIR was registered against school director Paramjit Kaur and owner cum president Navdeep Singh, who according to police, did not join the investigations despite multiple summons.
The case was registered on the statement of one Tamannapreet Kaur of Kaunke Khurd village and her classmates and their parents who told police that the school took tuition fee of Rs 1200 per month from them. Further, they claimed that the school also took Rs 1600 from each student claiming that it was board fee to register for exams but they were never issued admit cards. The FIR was registered under Sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 120-B (conspiracy) of IPC at Jagraon Sadar police station on Saturday after students blocked Jagraon-Moga road alleging police inaction. Students said that their one previous year has been wasted due to the school’s negligence.
Despite the intervention of Jagraon MLA Sarvjit Kaur Manuke, the PSEB said that it was not possible to allow students to sit for exams as per rules, as the school was bound to register them and pay fee within the deadline. Moreover, according to PSEB the school was no longer “recognised” with the board as it did not even pay its “continuation fee” for two years.
