Students join hands to uproot discrimination against girl child

To spread awareness about the girl child,a series of activities related to girl child protection and survival were organised at the Government Home Science College on Thursday.

The event was part of the ‘Value the girl child’ project,which is an initiative of the UT Administration’s action plan for gender sensitisation and removing girl child discrimination.

Director Higher Education,Raji P Srivastava was the chief guest on the occasion.

Advocate Madhu P Singh delivered a talk on the role of women in protecting their own rights. Using examples,she also spoke at length on domestic violence,awareness and punishments associated with it.

The students of the college choreographed and staged a dance drama,which focused on the elimination of discrimination of the girl child.

A street play on female foeticide was organised by the students of the department of Human Development and Family Relations.

The importance of education for the girl child,the need of a balanced diet,health and cleanliness were hilighted through a puppet show.

The students also displayed collages and audio-visual aids pertaining to issues such as female foeticide,child labour,healthy nutrition,child education,adolescent stress.

‘Art for the girl child’ ends at GCG-11

Another two-day workshop titled ‘Art for the girl child’ based on the theme “Valuing the Girl Child” being held at Government College for Girls,Sector-11,concluded on Thursday. Around 15 artists from the region participated in the workshop and students from various colleges of the city learnt painting skills under the guidance of these painters. Paintings portraying the conditions faced by the girl child and the social problems surrounding her were depicted in a varied manner.
