A 14-year-old girl, student of Class IX in New Public School, committed suicide by hanging herself with the ceiling fan at her Sector 26 Police Lines residence on Friday. No suicide note was found from the spot.
The girls parents said she was depressed after failing to secure good marks in half-yearly examinations, following which the school authorities had refused to promote her to the next class. Onkar Singh, the father of the deceased,is a head constable with the Chandigarh police.
Police said Preeti was alone in the house when she hanged herself around 2 pm. After returning from the market,Preetis mother found the door bolted from inside. When her knocks went unanswered, she called upon the neighbours who broke open the door.
It appeared that Preeti had hung herself just a few minutes before we found her. She was rushed her to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 16,where doctors declared her dead on arrival, a relative told the media.
She had discussed the matter with us… the fact that she did not secure good marks in the exams. I had advised her to work hard for the final exams. We did not expect her to commit suicide, Onkar Singh said.
The parents also blamed the school authorities for mounting unnecessary pressure on Preeti thus forcing her to take the extreme step. R D Singh, principal of the school, meanwhile, termed the allegations as baseless. Singh blamed the media for siding with the victims parents and maintained that Preeti was a bright student who could not have committed suicide. How can a bright student like her,who was very good at studies, kill herself and why will the school not promote her to the next class,as alleged by her parents?
Police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC.
