The pen-down strike called by the PGI employees union and technicians received a lukewarm response today with no disruption reported in the routine or laboratory services at the hospital.

Contrarily, utter confusion prevailed at the hospital from 9 am to 11 am,the scheduled time for the protest,as most of the employees were not even aware of any call for strike.

The union had already decided that the staff from emergency services, operation theatres and ICUs would not be asked to take part in the two-hour strike.

The strike had been launched by the All India Health Employees and Workers Confederation in support of the enhancement of Patient Care Allowance to Rs 3,200 at a par with Nursing Allowance.

“There has some confusion among the employees and PGI management over the protest today,as both were under the impression that the call for protest had been withdrawn in view of the call withdrawn by Medical Technologists Association (MTA). This confusion led to a subdued response at PGI,” said Ashwini Munjal of MTA.

Around 100 employees later assembled in the lower cafeteria. The PGI spokesperson stated later in the evening,“All patient care areas functioned smoothly today. There was absolutely no impact on the services in the institute.” The union plans to hold a similar two-hour strike on Wednesday as well.
